Most people are familiar with Wi-Fi connections at home, work, coffee shops or the mall. There’s an “access point” you connect your device to so you can access the Internet but not connect device to device.
With Wi-Fi Direct you can now connect to devices together to exchange information, music, videos and more! Connect your laptop to your PC or iTouch to move files around.

So think of this as similar to Bluetooth wireless but much faster and more than headsets etc..
